'We'll always have Paris'
One of the only actresses to win three Academy Awards, Ingrid Bergman is one of the greatest performers of all time. Born in Stockholm to a Swedish father and German mother, she began her career acting in European films. It was in 1942, with the release of the iconic wartime masterpiece, Casablanca, that she achieved worldwide fame. She went on to star in For Whom the Bell Tolls, Gaslight, The Bells of St. Mary's, and Joan of Arc, all of which netted her nominations for Best Actress.
In 1950 she starred in Rossellini's neorealist masterpiece, Stromboli, released after it emerged that the two had engaged in an affair outside of marriage, creating a scandal that kept Bergman from the US for several years. She also took to the stage, winning a Tony for her performance in Joan of Lorraine, and won two Primetime Emmy Awards, giving her the coveted 'Triple Crown' of acting. Bergman spoke five languages and acted in all of them; she was a titan of the craft and a symbol of the new Europe, and her legacy will never be forgotten.
