David Gahr

David Gahr's body of work is considered one of the most beautiful and significant collections of art of all time.

His journey started as a stock-boy at Sam Goody's record store in midtown Manhattan. Gahr's camera hobby led him to photograph many of the stars, musicians and music industry suits who came in the store, often directly from the jazz clubs on West 52nd Street.

He became a professional photographer in 1958 when his unique skill in portraiture was recognised by Folkways Records founder Moses Asch. This skill was put to use on the album jackets of the Folkways seminal roster of traditional and contemporary record artists who inspired the folk music revival of the 1960s and would influence the direction of American popular music and culture for the next 40 years

Gahr's photography captures the essential poetry and soul of the artists and their music. It was his images that formed the perception of the music industry in the 1960s and 70s. His work retained a dignified authenticity that appealed to the integrity of a new generation and thus, Gahr became one of the most sought after photographers in the industry.

We are so happy to be able to share with you David Gahr's iconic images of the best American folk, pop, blues and jazz artists across the 20th Century.
