The One, The Only...

Marlon Brando is widely considered one of the greatest actors ever to grace the silver screen. Taking inspiration from the exceptional Stella Adler and the work of Konstantin Stanislavski, he developed method acting to a pitch of perfection that has rarely been matched. His turn as Stanley Kowalski in the film adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire left audiences stunned, and he netted two Oscars for his performances in On the Waterfront and The Godfather. Never one to shy away from controversy, he refused to accept his second Oscar; instead, it was accepted by Sacheen Littlefeather, who raised awareness of the plight of Native Americans.

In later life he fell prey to his own appetites; once, when he was on a strict diet, he paid the neighbour's son to throw McDonald's hamburgers over the garden wall. Despite his over-indulgence, he continued to give powerful performances, in Coppola's Apocalypse Now and Last Tango in Paris. Brando blazed a trail for the next generation of method actors, for De Niro and Pacino, with his unforgettable career.
