A gangster and a poet, Tupac Shakur defined the sound of a generation before his untimely death aged twenty-five.

Born to Black Panther parents, Tupac mixed lyrical mastery, crisp, electric production, and bold political messaging. He ran into trouble early in his career, when the Vice President came after his first album, 2Pacalypse Now, saying 'There's no reason for a record like this to be released. It has no place in our society.', to which Tupac responded:

I just wanted to rap about things that affected young black males. When I said that, I didn't know that I was gonna tie myself down to just take all the blunts and hits for all the young black males, to be the media's kicking post for young black males.

By the time his third album came out Tupac was one of the biggest musicians in the US. Me Against the World debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and sold 240,000 copies in its first week.
