Few figures have embodied glamour and sensuality as completely as Marilyn Monroe, the iconic actress who became Playboy’s very first cover star and famously sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy in a skin-tight gown so fitted it had to be stitched onto her body.

Yet beneath the image of the blonde bombshell was a determined and talented actress whose career is often overshadowed by her celebrity status. Born Norma Jeane Mortenson, Monroe endured a difficult childhood, spending much of her early life in foster care. She married at just sixteen and later worked in a wartime munitions factory, where she was discovered by a photographer. In 1946, she entered Hollywood under a new name and with newly dyed blonde hair.

Monroe quickly rose to fame through memorable roles in films such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and The Seven Year Itch. Eager to be taken seriously as an actress, she went on to study drama professionally, a decision that earned critical praise for her performance in Bus Stop in 1956. Three years later, she starred in what became her most celebrated film, Some Like It Hot, alongside Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.

Behind the fame, however, Monroe faced growing personal struggles, including the breakdown of her marriage to playwright Arthur Miller and increasing pressure from life in the public eye. Her unforgettable rendition of “Happy Birthday” to President Kennedy in May 1962 became one of her final major public appearances. Monroe died later that year, in August 1962, at the age of just 36, leaving behind a legacy that continues to captivate audiences around the world.
